The Ice Wars Are Coming!
Five of the country's best ice carvers came to Middlefield to do battle for fame and prizes in our two-day Ice Wars Competition.
In a test of imagination, skills, speed, and endurance, the carvers tried to out-perform their competition in three exciting ice carving events!
Sat., Feb. 25; 10am-3pm: Compulsory Ice Carving
Within a five hour period, carvers transformed five blocks of ice (1,500 lbs) into shimmering, crystal-clear works of art. The Compulsory competition saluted our Winterfest's exciting 40 year history as the carvers created a design based upon themes from previous years' events.
This part of the competition required extreme attention to detail, speed, and intense pre-planning.
Sun., Feb. 26; 10am-1pm: Freestyle Ice Carving
With 600 pounds of ice and a full arsenal of carving tools at his disposal, each carver sculpted a design of his own choosing.
Sound easy? Each carver had only three hours to carve! Working under such pressure required confidance, extraordinary carving skills, and a very focused approach to the ice. No room for error!
Sun., Feb. 26, 2:30pm-3:30pm: Speed Challenge
A true test of skill, imagination, and improvisation, the Speed Challenge element of our competition was completely unplanned, intense, and exciting! Once the carvers picked the theme (out of a hat), the ice chips started flying! The carvers were allowed only sixty minutes and a limited selection of carving tools for sculpting--it was great fun watching them improvise on the spot!
