Connecticut Grown Raspberries Are Ready to Pick at Lyman Orchards

Middlefield, Conn. (June 24, 2015) – Nothing compares to snacking on a handful of bright-red ripe raspberries or taking a bite out of a fresh plucked strawberry. Lyman Orchards, Connecticut’s Sweet Spot, invites you and your family to take part in pick-your-own season with some of the most popular berries in the world. Raspberries will be ready in early July and will be available for picking until mid-August, while strawberry season is coming to a close and there is not much time left to grab a basket of the shortcake toppers.

“Raspberries and strawberries make a delicious addition to any meal and are packed with nutrients and rich in antioxidants,” said John Lyman III “They’re great for pies, muffins, pancakes or as a healthy snack on their own. We hope you and your family find time to visit our orchards and pick-your-own fresh fruit as there is nothing more flavorful than a fresh-picked berry. You’ll be hooked from the first bite!”

The summer crop of Raspberries will be available until mid-August, while the strawberry season will come to a close shortly after the start of July. Anyone interested in pick-your-own is encouraged to call the Lyman Orchards’ Hotline at 860-349-6015 for up-to-the-minute information on picking times and conditions. The new Lyman Orchards website also features a Pick-Your-Own section and user-friendly calendar highlighting what’s in season and key dates. Below is a delicious summertime recipe for Lyman Orchards’ own fresh raspberry crisp:

Lyman’s Fresh Raspberry Crisp

  • 1 quart Lyman raspberries
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup margarine, softened
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats

 

Directions

Preheat oven to 350. Place fruit in the bottom of a 9-inch square baking pan and sprinkle sugar over fruit. In a medium bowl blend together the margarine, flour, brown sugar and oats, until it resembles a coarse meal. Sprinkle over the fruit. Bake for 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve hot.  

Choosing Raspberries
Choose plump evenly-colored berries that have a soft hazy gloss and are free of dents and bruises

Storing
Raspberries are highly perishable and very fragile. Berries should keep for 1-2 days in the refrigerator under ideal conditions. Keep the berries dry in storage and consume them as soon as possible after purchase. Handle with extreme care when washing and only rinse just before use.

Freezing Your Fresh-Picked Raspberries
Fresh berries can easily be frozen until you are ready to use them. To freeze raspberries, gently rinse in cool water then allow to dry completely before placing in sealed containers.
