|Who: Pick Your Own pear season has arrived at Lyman Orchards!
What: Versatile, sweet and always delicious, pears are the perfect late summer treat. Enjoy a beautiful day on the farm picking your own, and make sure you stop by the Apple Barrel farm market for Connecticut-grown produce, fruit from the orchards, freshly baked goods, and breakfast or lunch.
When: Now through September.
Where: Lyman Orchards, 32 Reeds Gap Rd, Middlefield, Conn.
Why: Among the world's oldest cultivated and most beloved fruits, pears appear in Homer’s The Odyssey, where the poet lauds the fruit as a "gift of the gods.” Early colonists brought pear trees to America's eastern settlements. The rest is a fruitful history, as pears rank second to the apple as the most popular fruit. Pears also pack a potent punch: they’re high in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C, and they’re low in calories -- fewer than 100 per fruit.
