What is Pi Day?

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about math, and of course, EAT PIE.

Date Night Chocolate Fudge Cakes for 2

Rich, gooey, and irresistibly chocolatey, these cakes are the ultimate way to end a romantic Valentine's Day!

Ingredients:

- 3 ounces (85g) semi-sweet chocolate (3/4 of a standard baking chocolate bar)
- 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream
- 3 tablespoons (36g) packed light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) beaten egg (crack 1 egg, beat it, and use 2 Tbsp)
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 6 tablespoons (46g) all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
- Powder sugar (optional for topping)

Directions:
  1. Lightly grease two 6-ounce ramekins with butter or nonstick spray. Place them on a baking sheet. Set aside.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C).
  3. Coarsely chop 2 ounces (57g) of semi-sweet chocolate. Reserve 1 ounce (28g) for step 5 (don’t chop). Combine the chopped chocolate and heavy cream in a medium heatproof bowl. Microwave in 20-second increments, stirring after each increment until melted and smooth. Whisk in the brown sugar until no lumps remain. Whisk in the oil, 2 Tablespoons of beaten egg, and vanilla extract until combined. Set aside.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, and baking soda together. Pour the dry mixture into the wet ingredients and fold with a silicone spatula until all of the ingredients are combined and there are no lumps. Pour evenly into the ramekins; they should be just about 3/4 of the way full.
  5. Cut the remaining 1 ounce of chocolate in half. Place a piece of chocolate (0.5oz/14g) into the center of each filled ramekin and use a spoon to fully submerge the chocolate.
  6. Bake for 15–17 minutes, rotating the baking sheet at the 8-minute mark.
  7. Remove from the oven and serve immediately. The centers will be slightly gooey, with melted chocolate inside. Serve warm.

Board Game Speed Dating - Ages 25 - 39 at 1741 Pub & Grill

Finding someone can be painful. But board games are always awesome. So what if you combined board games and searching for a partner?

Picture this: Check out the vibe at 1741 Pub & Grill at Lyman Orchards Golf Club for a night of games and mingling. You sit down for a night of games. A gaming concierge walks you through several games over the course of the night. You play classics you love and discover brand new games you've never heard of, playing each with a different group of fun singles. Explore the menu and nosh on amazing selections of food and drink, from savory entrees to craft beers that pair perfectly with the fun. At the end of the night, you give your gaming concierge a list of the folks you met that you'd like to date and a list of those you met that you'd like to just hang out with as friends. If any two people put down the same name as each other in either column, then your gaming concierge will make sure you get each other's e-mail address and you can coordinate a time to hang out.
Best case scenario: You find true love, discover some awesome board games, and make some new friends.
Bad case scenario: You accomplish only one of those three things, which is still pretty great.
Worst case scenario: Your first beer, house wine, hard cider or soft drink is included in the ticket price.

Before you decide to buy tickets, a few basics we should cover:
1) This event is for men & women, ages 25-39. We also have events for gay men and queer women. And we're hoping to add events to serve even more people in the future! Head over to https://www.quirkevents.com/connecticut to see what else we have to offer. (If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, you'll be able to join our mailing list and get notified about future events. Plus, joining our mailing list gets you 50% off your first ticket purchase!)
2) To stay up-to-date on everything we have going on at Quirk Events, follow us on Instagram @quirkeventshq!
3) Refunds are only available to those who cancel with more than 48 hours' notice, in order to make sure we have enough time to find a replacement for you and keep the event well-populated. (Exceptions will be made for emergency situations on a case-by-case basis). After that, we're blowing the money from your ticket sale on something awesome and nonrefundable.
4) If we get to 24 hours before the event and still haven't sold five tickets for each gender, we will cancel the event (and notify you). When we have run this event in the past, tickets have consistently sold very well, so we don't expect this to happen. But we thought we should cover this in case it came up.
5) How many games we have and which ones we use will be based in part on how many people attend, so we can't tell you for sure what we'll have right now. But the goal is for all of them to be fun, light, easy-to-learn games. Selection will include games from both the something-you-have-played-before category and the something-you-haven't-played-before category. The games are also chosen because they often tend to spark conversation and leave room for chatting with new people as you play. All games will be group games, meaning you'll get a chance to meet a handful of people with each new round.

Lyman Orchards 18th Annual Sunflower Maze Sets Opening Date of July 27th

Annual Maze Raises Money for Connecticut Children’s Foundation

Middlefield, CT - Lyman Orchards, a family-owned popular New England destination for over 275 years, has announced that its annual Sunflower Maze will open on July 27th, 2024. Nearly one mile of paths surrounded by 350,000 yellow, orange, and red sunflowers make up a design based on the mascot for Hartford’s Double-A minor league baseball team, the Yard Goats. Lyman Orchards has once again partnered with Connecticut Children’s Foundation, donating $1 of each ticket purchase to the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will commence at 9AM on opening day of the Sunflower Maze. The Hartford Yard Goats mascot, Chompers, will be present from 9am-11am to take photos with maze-goers.

The 3-acre maze takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and will be open daily from 9AM until 4:30PM and runs from July 27th to August 25th. The maze offers visitors the opportunity to see butterflies, yellow finches, and a beautiful scenic backdrop of the surrounding orchard hills. Admission costs $11 for adults and $6 for children ages four to 12. Children under three will be admitted for free.

Lyman Orchards is continuing its partnership with the Connecticut Children’s Foundation – a health network that focuses exclusively on the health and well-being of children. Over the past 17 years, $193,419 dollars have been raised for Connecticut Children’s through the annual maze.

“Each year, we look forward to the joy and happiness that the Sunflower Maze brings our visitors,” says Lyman Orchards Executive Vice President, John Lyman. “Additionally, the maze highlights the important work that Connecticut Children’s does for our community day in and day out, and supports them as they treat children in need.”

“The Hartford Yard Goats are excited to be chosen for the design of the Lyman Orchards Sunflower Maze,” shares Tim Restall, President of the Hartford Yard Goats, “This collaboration celebrates two beloved Connecticut traditions – sunflowers and baseball – offering a one-of-a-kind summer experience for families and fans alike.”

In addition to walking through the Sunflower Maze, visitors may cut their own sunflowers for $4 per stalk at the maze location in a separate field. After completing the maze, guests are encouraged to partake in pick-your-own activities in the family-friendly orchard and stop by the Apple Barrel Farm Market for fresh food and baked goods, as well as soft-serve ice cream.
