Crisp, Sweet, and Golden: Shinseiki Pears at Lyman Orchards

August 26, 2025

At Lyman Orchards, we're always excited to share the unique fruits that thrive in our orchards, and one of the most special among them is the Shinseiki pear. Also known as the "New Century" pear, this variety is an Asian pear celebrated for its crisp bite, golden skin, and refreshingly sweet flavor.

Unlike traditional European pears that soften as they ripen, Shinseiki pears maintain a firm, crunchy texture, similar to an apple, while delivering a burst of juicy sweetness with every bite. They're perfect for snacking fresh off the tree, slicing into salads, or pairing with cheese for an elegant appetizer.

The Shinseiki pear trees flourish in our well-drained soils and benefit from the sunny days and cool nights. Each spring, their blossoms set the stage for a summer of careful trending, thinning, pruning, and monitoring to ensure the pears grow to their best size and flavor. By late summer, the fruit develops its signature yellow-gold skin, signaling it's time for harvest.

When you pick a Shinseiki pear straight from the orchard, you'll taste the difference that comes from generations of farming knowledge combined with the unique climate of our farm. Crisp, juicy, and refreshing, these pears are a seasonal treat you won't want to miss.

Delicious Ways to Enjoy Shinseiki Pears

If you'd like to enjoy your pears beyond snacking, here are a couple of simple, tasty recipes:

1. Shinseiki Pear & Arugula Salad

Ingredients:

  • 2 Shineiki pears, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups fresh arugula
  • 1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese or feta
  • 1/4 cup candied walnuts or pecans
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Directions:

Toss arugula, pears, cheese, and nuts in a large bowl. Whisk together olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper for a light dressing. Drizzle over the salad just before serving.

2. Honey-Roasted Shinseiki Pears

Ingredients:

  • 4 Shinseiki pears, halved and cored
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional, for serving)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375ºF. Place pear halves on a baking sheet, cut side up. Drizzle with honey and butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon. Roast for 20-25 minutes until golden and fragrant. Serve warm on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a decadent dessert.
