Lyman Orchards to host American Lantern Festival

December 13, 2021

Middlefield, CT—Lyman Orchards, an independently-owned family destination for over 275 years, is pleased to host the American Lantern Festivals—a re-creation of a centuries-old Chinese tradition renowned for dazzling light displays.

This enchanting attraction—scheduled to open December 15th at 70 Lyman Road, adjacent to a Lyman Orchards’ golf course—will feature over 1,000 handcrafted lanterns beautifully arranged across 30 scene sets. Such light shows, which have origins dating to the Han dynasty (c. 200 BC), are traditionally celebrated near the Chinese New Year. Similar light festivals are held today in many Asian cultures.

The American Lantern Festivals at Lyman Orchards uses the same techniques and materials from ancient times—as well as special lighting effects, music and animation—to tell a captivating, family-friendly story as guests stroll along the half-mile Lantern Pathway (approx. one hour in duration).

“This light show captures the imaginations—and the hearts—of kids and adults of all ages,” states Lyman Orchards Executive Vice President John Lyman. “It’s a breathtaking experience—one that’s sure to be a long-lasting family memory.”

Meet The Chef

At nine years old, Ben Gaffney asked if he could work alongside his father, a chef, at Congress Rotisserie in New Haven. The elder Gaffney put the boy to work washing dishes for two years, in the hope that it would discourage his interest in the restaurant business.

But a calling is a calling. Ben Gaffney has spent his life since then pursuing the wonders of food, bringing Middlefield along for the ride as chef at Lyman Orchards since 2017.
