What is a Red Delicious Apple?

A Red Delicious apple is a classic variety of apple known for its bright red color, conical shape, and glossy skin. It's one of the most recognizable apple types in the U.S. and has been widely grown since the late 1800s.

• Taste & Texture: Sweet, mild flavor with a crisp but sometimes slightly mealy texture when overripe. It's not very tart
• Uses: Best eaten as a snack or in salads; not idea for baking because it tends to lose shape and flavor when cooked.
• Appearance: Deep red skin, often with small yellowish spots; medium to large size; somewhat elongated compared to rounder apples like Gala or Honeycrisp
• History: Originated in Iowa in the 1870s and became very popular because of its bright color and long storage life.

At Lyman Orchards, Red Delicious apples are typically available for Pick Your Own in early October. 

Red Delicious Tip:

Store Red Delicious apples in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator in a perforated plastic bag or loosely wrapped in a damp paper towel. Keeping them cold and slightly humid helps them stay crisp and fresh for several weeks.

Bonus Tip: Keep them away from strong-smelling foods - apples can absorb odors - and try not to store them with bananas or other fruits that release a lot of ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening.
