Pick Your Own Blueberries

If you're looking for a wholesome, fun, family-friendly getaway in Connecticut, a visit to Lyman Orchards PYO Blueberry field is the perfect destination! And because we grow so many different varieties of fruits, it's worth making the trip! The Blueberry season typically lasts about 6 weeks (early July-mid August), and traditionally overlaps the end of Raspberry season (late June-late July) and the beginning of Peach season (mid July - late September). The early berries are the largest, and later berries are medium-sized but packed with flavor.

For the best PYO blueberries experience, be sure to check our Facebook Page for daily updates, and read our pick your own tips.

Pick Your Own Blueberries Pricing:

Blueberries are Nutrient-Rich

Blueberries may be tiny, but they are big on nutritional value and are one of the healthiest choices in the fruit family. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but a cup of blueberries a day keeps aging at bay! Studies have shown blueberries to aid in memory retention and help slow the body's aging process. Below are some of the health benefits blueberries offer.

  • Rich in Antioxidants
  • High in Dietary Fiber
  • Low in Sugar
  • Rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and Manganese

Fun Facts about Blueberries

  • Unlike everything else we grow, blueberries require acidic soil, with an ideal pH of 4.5. Our other crops require a pH range of 6-6.5. Sulfur is applied to the soil to bring down the pH levels
  • Blueberries do best in well-drained soils (contrary to the belief that they like marshy ground)
  • Blueberries are a favorite for birds, therefore fields are netted to protect the berries. Some growers use trained falcons for bird control since the falcons scare the birds away
  • A well-cared-for blueberry field will remain productive for 50-75 years or more

There are so many tasty ways to include these nutritious berries into your breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert!

Spend a morning or afternoon blueberry picking at Connecticut’s Sweet Spot®, Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, CT.

Season

Early July - Mid August

Choosing

Choose firm berries when picking.

Storing

Fresh-picked blueberries can be stored up to a week in your refrigerator if stored in a covered container. Do not wash blueberries until you are ready to use them.

Freezing

Frozen blueberries will retain their flavor for up to two years. For best results, we recommend keeping berries as dry as possible before freezing. Do not add sugar before freezing berries. To freeze berries individually, lay them out on a flat tray, freeze, then place frozen berries in container and store in freezer.

Tips

For best results when baking with frozen blueberries, lightly dust unthawed blueberries with flour before stirring into batter.
